FAQ's

Here are some of the most common questions we get asked.

What is FTTP?

FTTP, or Fibre to the Premises, delivers a pure fibre connection from the telephone exchange directly to your property, with no copper wires in between. This ensures a faster, more reliable connection.

To provide more context, the term "fibre" has been used in the broadband market for years, but it often refers to Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC), also known as "Superfast Fibre." With FTTC, fibre runs from the local exchange to a street cabinet (usually green) and then connects to your home via traditional copper telephone wires. The average maximum speed for FTTC is around 80Mbps.

In contrast, Kloud9's FTTP service guarantees a true fibre experience, offering higher speeds and enhanced reliability for your home or business.

FTTP (Fibre to the Premises)

Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology brings the power of fibre optic cables directly to your home, replacing outdated copper telephone wires. This upgrade ensures faster and more reliable internet speeds for your household.

As the UK's copper network ages, maintenance costs will increase, and its ability to support our increasingly digital world will decline. Fibre optics provide a future-proof solution for our connectivity needs, with benefits such as environmental friendliness and reduced impact compared to traditional copper networks.

Experience the difference with Kloud9's FTTP service and stay connected to the digital world with ease.

FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet)

FTTC, which stands for Fibre to the Cabinet, is a type of internet connection that utilises high-speed fibre optic cables that run from the internet service provider to a street cabinet or a nearby cabinet. After this, traditional copper telephone lines carry the connection the rest of the way to your home.

To understand it better, think of it as a high-speed motorway (the fibre optic cable) that gets you most of the way to your destination. When you get closer to your destination (your home), you exit onto a slower local road (the copper line). This type of connection is faster than traditional broadband but not as fast as Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), where the fibre optic cables run directly to your home.

FAQ's

Here are some of the most common questions we get asked.

Why Choose Kloud9?

How is Kloud9 different to my current service provider?

Our network doesn't rely on the old copper-based networks that deliver today's broadband service. Instead, we have installed fibre optic cables directly into your home or business, meaning faster speeds and more reliable connections that are significantly faster than the UK average.

What is the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme?

The government scheme helps an alternative network provider like Kloud9 to deliver fibre broadband to areas of the UK that would not normally be commercially viable. These areas are usually remote and have high infrastructural costs due to the civil engineering required to build the network under existing infrastructure.

Why should I upgrade to full fibre?

Full-fibre broadband will allow you to connect more devices at home, which is particularly important as consumers demand more bandwidth-intensive services like video and gaming. Full-fibre broadband gives you a higher upload speed than traditional broadband — letting you enjoy the full benefits of online gameplay without lag.

With its faster speeds, you can upload larger files to your cloud storage and collaborate with other team members on the go. You can finally work from home and spend more time with your family.

If you're thinking of selling your house, Full Fibre broadband could increase its value — if you install it before putting your home on the market, potential buyers will see that the house is future-proofed. If you're not planning to sell the house any time soon, having Full Fibre could mean paying less for your broadband!

Can I connect my business?

Yes!  We offer a full-fibre broadband connection that delivers hyper-fast downloads and uploads for businesses and households alike.

If you're in a multi-dwelling unit then your contract will be monthly.

Do you charge VAT?

Our residential packages are VAT inclusive and our business packages are VAT exclusive

What are your operating hours?

Our support desk is open :
Monday through Friday 8am to 8pm, and
Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 4pm.
You can contact us via email or telephone. (The desk will be monitored for any out of hours emergencies).

What if I'm already in a contract?

If you are currently under contract with another provider, you'll need to cancel that service yourself before starting a new contract with Kloud9. If you have an existing copper connection or a coax connection (like Virgin Media), you can choose to run both services simultaneously if you're eager to start enjoying the benefits of full fibre right away. Alternatively, you can wait until your existing contract ends and then begin your service with us.

We do recommend overlapping your services to account for any potential delays in connecting to full fibre. This ensures a seamless transition without any disruption to your internet access during the switch.

Where can I get additional information?

Do you charge for the installation?

Our installation services are completely free if you're part of the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme.

If you don’t fall under this, there will be a charge for the installation.

Will you damage my drive-way / property / garden?

We'll be connecting your property to the fibre network using existing infrastructure — underground ducts and overhead poles — thereby ensuring your convenience and safety.

What does the installation involve?

We'll send an engineer to your home at a convenient time to install your next-generation Fibre Broadband connection. It'll take about 2 hours and the engineer will clean up afterwards, so you can get back to your life without a hitch.

How long does it take to set up?

We aim to have you up and running in no more than 2 hours from the moment our engineer arrives at your door.

Do I require a phone line?

No, we don’t use the BT copper network, we install a brand-new Fibre connection to your property.

Do you remove the old copper connection?

No, the old copper network is property of Openreach, and we cannot remove your old connection.

Technical

What if I already have fibre?

We install fibre-optic cable to your property, allowing for blazingly fast download and upload speeds. You may already have FTTC  (fibre to the cabinet), which means you get your service over copper from the green cabinet at the top of your street to a fibre node at the curb of your property. If you're far away from the node, you experience slower speeds because of interference.

Do you guarantee speeds?

At Kloud9, we're committed to providing the fastest possible speed for your home. While we don't currently guarantee specific speeds, our estimates are based on actual speeds measured on other broadband services using the same package.

The speeds we provide, including the minimum expected speed, are measured from Kloud9's core network to the Kloud9-provided router in your home. Please note that these speeds do not include Wi-Fi connections throughout your home.

We strive to offer an exceptional online experience, but factors outside our control may affect your speeds. For instance, Wi-Fi signal strength, device specifications, and peak usage times during evenings and weekends can impact your connection.

Please be aware that we don't provide the cabling or hardware required to connect your device to our router. Make sure you have a gigabit-capable Ethernet cable and any necessary adapters.

If you’d like to check your broadband speeds, please follow the instructions below or here.

What is a contention ratio?

Think of your internet connection as a road: it has a certain number of lanes that can fit cars. The more cars on the road, the longer it takes for you to get from point A to point B. In terms of internet connections, contention ratio refers to how many households are using the same main broadband line as you.

What is Kloud9's contention ratio?

Our network is designed to operate at less than 60% capacity; therefore, we can operate on low contention ratios, which allows us to keep it running at optimal speeds.

What router will you supply?

You'll receive a Kloud9 SuperHub.

Can I move to another provider?

You can leave us at the end of your contract if you really want to, but we hope you'll consider sticking around!

If your Internet Service Provider (ISP) has a service agreement with Kloud9, you can switch to them when your contract ends.

How do I check my broadband speeds?

To get the best results, we recommend you use speedtest.net and follow the step-by-step guide below:

— For connections up to 300Mb/s, use speedtest.net

— For connections above 300Mb/s, we recommend you download speed test’s Windows, Mac, Linux, or CLI application (speedtest.net) as these are more accurate than your internet browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari). Your browser may report a slower speed than you have.

Step-by-step guide on how to run a speed test:

1. Close all open programs and applications on your device, including any VPN software, and make sure you’re the only one using the broadband connection.

2. Connect your laptop/computer into the broadband router using an Ethernet (CAT5e or above) cable, and ensure you’re connected at 1Gb/s (1000Mb/s).

3. Make sure you’re wired in, as Wi-Fi speeds are often slower, so this won’t provide an accurate test of your internet connection speed at all.

4. Browse to www.speedtest.net or download, install, and run the application or CLI.
5. Make sure that the server selected is M247 – London. If not automatically selected, click on “Change Server”.

6. Type in “London” or “M247”

7. Select London – M247 and click GO to start your speed test

(If M247 is not available then we recommend using Manchester - Vodafone UK)

How to use the Speedtest.net Linux/CLI App

1. Download and install the speedtest CLI app

2. Once at the terminal type in speedtest -s 26434

-s 26434 specifies to use the M247 - London server.

-s 23968 specifies to use the Vodafone UK – Manchester server

Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme

How long is a voucher valid for ?

Claim your voucher and get setup with a Kloud9 connection in 12 months or less or your voucher will expire.

What is the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme?

The Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme is a government initiative in the UK that provides vouchers to eligible businesses and residents. These vouchers cover the installation costs of gigabit-capable broadband connections, promoting faster and more reliable internet access. The scheme aims to boost economic growth and productivity. Applicants can check eligibility and apply through the official government website.

Is the value of the voucher redeemable for cash?

No, the value of the voucher is paid to Kloud9 for the installation of the fibre network. This is only done post-installation and when you have confirmed that you're happy with your new connection.

What if I don't sign up now?

If you don't sign up for the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme now, you may miss out on the opportunity to benefit from free installation. The scheme only has a limited number of vouchers allocated for this purpose, so it's important to take advantage of it while it's available. Don't delay and risk missing out on faster and more reliable broadband connectivity. Sign up now to secure your voucher for free installation!

What happens if there are not enough sign-ups?

Due to the significant costs associated with installing fibre networks in rural areas, the viability of such projects depends on a significant proportion of the community showing interest and ultimately signing up for service.  So sign up today, you won't be disappointed!

How can I help spread the word?

Our marketing team is ready and waiting to support you! We can provide high-quality materials, ranging from posters to digital assets.

We can also sponsor local events and promote them on our social media channels.
